Getting to Vienna ...VIENNA Day 1

Getting to our destination was actually very easy. We parked the car, took a taxi, got on the plane and within  less than an hour from landing  we were already at our hotel. Although I love flying and seeing new airports, I also love when my holiday destinations are quick to reach. This gives me a longer holiday and therefore more time for relaxing and sightseeing.

Whenever I choose a long city break, I plan the first day in such a way to allow me to get an idea of the area surrounding the hotel I am staying in, as well as relaxing in my room. This helps me adjust to the city I am visiting, and gives me the chance to spot the local supermarkets, restaurants, metro stations and shopping areas. While we usually opt to stay in the city outskirts, to make the holiday more affordable and thus be able to stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel without breaking the bank, this time we were lucky to find a great deal in a 5 stars boutique hotel just in the heart of the modern area of Vienna. I am talking about the Levante Parliament Hotel which I will be reviewing in a separate post.

The weather in Vienna.....This was my first time travelling in the fall and I must say that although I was expecting the temperature to be low, I was surprised by how cold it already is here in October. In fact, even though I was wearing a coat as I got out of the airport to ride the taxi I froze. The temperature was 8 degrees Celsius and there was no sun shining, which made it worst. I started putting  on gloves, and after checking in formalities I layered one more cardigan under my coat and switched from flat pumps to riding boots. The temperature still felt cold when we left the hotel to browse around the area, but after a little you get used to it. I immediately knew I needed to buy new gloves and boots as well as a ticker coat to wear especially early in the morning and late in the evening. One funny fact about Vienna is that it is actually colder in the morning, even at 11.00 when the sun is already out than in the evening at 8.00 or 9.00. It must be the fact that it is more breezy in the morning than at night and that during the day the sun has the time to warm the air. Our room is very warm thanks to heating but my body can still perceive the cold temperature - so I hope I don't get chilblains. My lips and also my entire body feel dryer; so if you live in a hot country, I suggest you to moisturize a lot before coming to Vienna to prepare your body for the  colder weather.

In terms of sightseeing, we walked a lot on day 1 and I went inside both H&M and Forever 21, which are 2 shops I love but which we don't have in Malta. I only got few accessories. My favourite part of the day was getting to Mariahilfer Strabe. The walk to Mariahilfer Srabe, which by the way is a great shopping and dining area within 15 minutes or less walking distance from hotel, is a great one with lots of monuments, trees and so much greenery in general and the shops are amazing once you get to there. I was amazed by the beauty of the streets surrounded by nature while still being very urban.

For lunch we had panini at Anker. Food shops in Vienna are so beautiful, the food presentation is amazing, prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly. For dinner we had a teriyaki chicken salad with some crisps, followed by ritter sports chocolate filled with coconut. At the supermarket we also stocked up on water and bough few essentials. I must say the prices are very reasonable here, which is something surprised me as I was expecting everything to be very steeply priced.

So the first day is already over and, while I am here writing about it the next morning before getting ready for breakfast, I must say it was A GREAT FIRST DAY IN VIENNA.

Please note that I wrote this and the next 3 posts while I was in Vienna, from the 12 to the 19 October 2013.
