Fira, not to be confused with Thira, which is the official name of the beautiful Island of Santorini, is a stunning place to visit and not to be missed both if you are travelling to Santorini or just passing by on a cruise ship. The images below should help you understand why this place is so magical. The different coloured lights, especially when seen from a higher point on the Island like Firostefani or Imerovigli, make you wonder how the Earth can be such a beautiful place and definitely appreciate how lucky we are to live on this planet.
While in my opinion there are nicer towns to stay in, which have a great view with 4 and 5 stars resorts that are set in a more relaxed and peaceful location, I also think that Fira is the perfect town to spend both your mornings and your evenings. You can simply walk around and get lost through the many small cobbled streets, do some shopping, have an ice cream or better yet some greek frozen yougurt, pick up few souvenirs, browse through the restaurants' menus so as to pick your favourite spots for dinner time, seat in a cafe overlooking the caldera just admiring the view or seat on a bench in the main square and engage in people watching and finally but not least you can spend hours and hours taking pictures of the amazing views you want to capture and take home with you.
The main square at night, very close to Archipelagos. |
Very close to Argo Restaurant and a great spot for pictures and souvenirs shopping. |
And if you are looking for a great dining experience there is no better place to be in than Fira. Here are located my favourite 2 restaurants on the Island, which are Argo and Archipelagos. While the first is more relaxed but offers great views and tasty local food at reasonable prices, the second is more of a fine dining restaurant with gourmet food, great views but slightly higher prices.
Fira from far away. |
The donkeys going up the stairs linking the capital of the Island and the ferry port (over 600 stairs). |
Something cute you will come across is a herd of donkeys going up or down the stairs to the port below Fira where all the cruise ships stop. You might also want to go on the cable car, but you should be warned that you might have to wait several hours both ways due to the long queues.

Here is one of my favourite pictures of me in Fira. |
